Overview

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is a priority study permit program that allows faster visa processing — often within 20 calendar days — for eligible international students from select countries.
This stream is ideal for students who meet specific academic, financial, and language standards and want to begin their studies in Canada without delays.

Who Can Apply Through SDS?

You may be eligible for SDS if you:

  • Are a legal resident of one of these countries:
    India, Pakistan, Philippines, Vietnam, Morocco, Senegal, China, Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago

  • Have a letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada

  • Live outside Canada at the time of application

  • Pay the first year of tuition in full

  • Have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of $10,000 CAD or more from a Canadian bank

  • Complete an upfront medical exam (if required)

Submit a recent IELTS score with a minimum of 6.0 in each band (or TEF for French)

Required Documents (Per IRCC)

  • Valid passport

  • Letter of acceptance from a Canadian DLI

  • Tuition payment receipt for 1 full year

  • GIC certificate from a recognized Canadian financial institution

  • IELTS/TEF test results (minimum score required)

  • Medical exam proof (if applicable)

  • Police certificate (if requested)

Applications must be submitted online to qualify for SDS processing.

Gather all required documents before applying

Complete a study permit application online via IRCC’s portal

Upload SDS-specific documents (GIC, IELTS, tuition proof)

Submit biometrics and undergo a medical exam (if required)

Wait for a decision — most SDS applications are processed within 20 days
