PGWP to PR Pathway

Table of Contents

Overview

One of the biggest advantages of studying in Canada is the ability to transition from a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) to Permanent Residency (PR). The Canadian government actively encourages international graduates to stay, work, and contribute to the economy by offering multiple PR pathways.

We help you plan this transition from day one — turning your Canadian education into a long-term future.

Step 1: Graduate from a PGWP-Eligible Program

To qualify, you must complete a full-time program of at least 8 months at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). The PGWP lets you work in Canada up to 3 years, depending on your study length.

Step 2: Gain Canadian Work Experience

While on your PGWP, work experience in NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupations can count toward PR programs like:

  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry

  • Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

  • Quebec Experience Program (if studying in Quebec)

Most PR programs require at least 1 year of full-time skilled work experience in Canada.

Step 3: Apply for PR (Most Common Pathways)

  1. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • Requires 12 months of skilled work in Canada

  • No proof of settlement funds if you’re already employed

  • Fast processing through Express Entry (typically 6 months)

  1. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
  • Many provinces offer International Graduate Streams

  • Job offer may be required

  • Nomination adds 600 points to your Express Entry profile

  1. Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP)
  • For graduates with job offers in Atlantic Canada

  • No LMIA needed

  • Employer-driven with fast processing

What You Need to Qualify for PR

  • 1+ year of eligible Canadian work experience (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3)

  • Valid language test results (e.g., IELTS – CLB 7 or higher)

  • Police clearance and medical exam

  • Proof of education (ECA if foreign, not needed for Canadian grads)

  • A strong Express Entry profile (for CEC or PNP streams)
