Employer-Specific Work Permits (LMIA)

Table of Contents

Overview

The Employer-Specific Work Permit allows foreign nationals to work in Canada for a specific employer, in a specific job, and at a specific location, as outlined in the work permit conditions.
Most of these permits are issued after the employer obtains a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), proving that no Canadian worker is available to fill the role.

Who Can Apply?

You may be eligible if:

  • You have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer

  • Your employer has secured a positive LMIA from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)

  • You meet the education, language, and experience requirements for the position

You are ready to work in Canada temporarily under employer-specific conditions

What Is an LMIA?

A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that shows:

  • The employer tried to hire Canadians/permanent residents first

  • Hiring a foreign worker will not negatively affect the local labor market

  • The job offer is genuine and meets prevailing wage and labor standards

A positive LMIA supports your work permit application and is required for most employer-tied jobs
