Home Caregiver Pilots

Table of Contents

Overview

Canada’s Home Caregiver Pilots are two immigration programs that offer foreign caregivers a direct path to permanent residency. These pilots are designed for individuals who provide essential support to children, elderly persons, or those with medical needs in Canadian homes.

There are two streams under this pilot:

  • Home Child Care Provider Pilot

  • Home Support Worker Pilot

Each stream allows eligible caregivers to come to Canada with an occupation-specific open work permit, and eventually apply for PR.

Who Can Apply?

You may qualify if you:

  • Have a valid job offer in Canada for caregiving in a home setting (not institutional)

  • Meet the language requirement (CLB 5 in English or French)

  • Have 1 year of Canadian work experience in the relevant caregiving occupation (or are applying to gain it)

  • Completed at least one year of post-secondary education (or equivalent via ECA)

  • Intend to work full-time in a home (not a care facility)

If you don’t yet have the required work experience, you can apply for a work permit through the Gaining Experience category and then transition to PR.

Required Occupations (NOC 44100 & 44101)

Home Child Care Provider

Caring for children under 18 in a private home

Home Support Worker

Assisting seniors or persons with disabilities in their daily living

What Makes These Pilots Unique?

  • No LMIA is required for the job offer
  • Work permit is occupation-specific, not employer-specific
  • Includes family members – spouse can get an open work permit; children can get study permits
  • Direct PR pathway after completing 24 months of eligible work
