Temporary Resident Permits (TRP)

Table of Contents

Overview

A Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) allows individuals who are inadmissible to Canada or don’t meet regular entry requirements to enter or remain in the country legally for a limited time. TRPs are issued at the discretion of IRCC or border officers in situations where the benefits of entry outweigh the risks.

We help applicants build strong, compassionate, and justified TRP cases for entry, stay, or status restoration in Canada.

Who May Need a TRP?

You may be eligible for a TRP if:

  • You are inadmissible to Canada due to:

    • A past criminal offense (e.g., DUI, assault, theft)

    • Medical inadmissibility or serious health concerns

    • Immigration violations (e.g., overstays, misrepresentation)

  • You don’t qualify for a regular visa, but have compelling reasons to visit or remain in Canada

You are applying for restoration of status or need time to transition to another legal immigration path

Common Use Cases

  • Traveling to Canada for urgent family matters, business, or medical treatment

  • Remaining in Canada while applying for permanent residency on humanitarian grounds

  • Re-entering Canada after a criminal conviction that occurred years ago

Temporarily overcoming inadmissibility while a rehabilitation or PR application is in process

Required Documents

  • Personal statement explaining your circumstances and reason for entering or staying in Canada

  • Supporting documents (court records, police clearance, medical reports, invitation letters)

  • Proof of inadmissibility or lack of eligibility for standard visa

  • Evidence that your entry poses no public safety risk

  • Biometrics and medical exam (if applicable)

Validity & Processing Time

  • TRP Validity: From 1 day to 3 years, depending on the situation

  • Processing Time:

    • From outside Canada: ~3–6 months

    • At port of entry: Immediate decision (high risk if not prepared)

    • Inside Canada: ~6–12 months

Important Notes

  • TRPs are discretionary and not guaranteed

  • TRP holders must follow strict conditions (e.g., no work/study unless authorized)

TRPs can be used as a stepping stone to permanent residency in some humanitarian or spouse sponsorship cases
