Overview

Canada’s Self-Employed Persons Program offers a unique path to permanent residency for individuals in cultural, artistic, athletic, or creative fields who can contribute meaningfully to the country’s cultural or sporting landscape through self-employment.

This program is ideal for professionals who have worked independently and want to continue their careers in Canada — without the need for a job offer or employer sponsorship.

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify as a self-employed professional, you must:

  • Have at least 2 years of relevant experience in the past 5 years in:

    • Cultural activities (e.g., musicians, artists, filmmakers, authors, designers)

    • Athletics (e.g., athletes, coaches, trainers, referees)

  • Demonstrate the intent and ability to become self-employed in Canada

  • Be able to make a significant contribution to Canadian cultural or athletic life

  • Meet basic requirements for:

    • Education

    • Language ability (CLB 5 recommended)

Medical and security clearance

What Counts as “Self-Employed”?

You may qualify if you’ve:

  • Worked as an independent artist, performer, or athlete

  • Participated at a world-class level in international competitions or festivals

  • Built a freelance or consultancy practice in your field

Produced notable cultural or media work that has been publicly distributed

Submit a PR application through the Self-Employed stream

Send Supporting Docs

Provide language test results, police certificates, and medical exam results

Await IRCC Decision

Wait for IRCC decision (interviews may be required)

Required Documents

  • Detailed resume and work history

  • Portfolio or evidence of work (awards, contracts, publications, media features)

  • Letters of reference from clients, employers, or organizations

  • Language test results (IELTS, TEF)

  • Proof of education
