Overview

To study in Canada as an international student, you must meet specific eligibility requirements and submit a complete application to obtain a study permit. This permit allows you to legally stay in Canada during your academic program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

According to IRCC, you must:

  • Have a valid Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

  • Prove you have enough financial support to cover:

    • Tuition fees

    • Living expenses for yourself (and any accompanying family)

    • Return transportation

  • Show you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay (unless applying for PGWP or PR later)

  • Be in good health and complete a medical exam if required

  • Have no criminal record and provide police clearance certificates if requested

  • Prove ties to your home country (employment, family, property, etc.)

Here’s what you typically need to apply:

  • Valid passport

  • Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Canadian DLI

  • Proof of funds (bank statements, GIC, education loan letter, etc.)

  • Letter of explanation or Statement of Purpose (SOP)

  • Passport-size photographs (per IRCC specs)

  • Medical exam confirmation (if required)

  • Police certificate (if required)

  • Immigration forms (IMM 1294 and others)

  • Receipt of paid visa application fee

SDS Application Process

Gather all required documents before applying

Complete a study permit application online via IRCC’s portal

Upload SDS-specific documents (GIC, IELTS, tuition proof)

Submit biometrics and undergo a medical exam (if required)

Wait for a decision — most SDS applications are processed within 20 days

Additional Notes

  • If you plan to bring your spouse or children, you must also submit supporting documents for them

  • If you are applying through SDS, additional requirements like GIC and IELTS are mandatory

Study permits may include conditions, such as which school you can attend or whether you can work while studying
