Overview

A Study Permit is the official authorization international students need to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. It allows you to stay in Canada for the duration of your academic program and may also open doors to work during studies and apply for permanent residency after graduation.

Who Needs a Study Permit?

You need a study permit if:

  • You are an international student enrolled in a full-time program (longer than 6 months) at a DLI

  • You plan to study at a college, university, or vocational school in Canada

  • You are not a Canadian citizen, PR, or refugee

Short-term programs (6 months or less) may not require a permit, but applying still offers future benefits like work eligibility.

Study Permit Requirements (Per IRCC)

To apply, you must:

  • Have a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Canadian DLI

  • Show proof of funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and return transportation

  • Prove intent to leave Canada after your studies (unless eligible for PGWP)

  • Provide valid travel documents and pass a medical exam (if required)

  • Be admissible (no criminal or immigration violations)
