Visitor Visa (TRV)

Table of Contents

Overview

A Visitor Visa, officially called a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), allows foreign nationals to visit Canada for a short period — typically up to 6 months. Whether you’re exploring the country, visiting family and friends, or attending a business event, the TRV is your official permission to enter Canada.

Who Needs a Visitor Visa?

You need a TRV if:

  • You’re from a country that requires a visa to enter Canada

  • You plan to visit Canada temporarily for tourism, family visit, or business travel

  • You are not planning to work or study during your visit

Citizens of visa-exempt countries may require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead.

Key Requirements

To apply for a TRV, you must:

  • Hold a valid passport

  • Prove you will leave Canada at the end of your stay

  • Show sufficient funds for your visit (accommodation, travel, etc.)

  • Be in good health (a medical exam may be required)

  • Have no criminal history and be admissible to Canada

  • Submit a complete application with supporting documents

Optional: A letter of invitation from a Canadian family member or host can strengthen your application.
