Overview

The Self-Employed Persons Program offers a pathway to permanent residency for individuals with relevant experience in cultural activities, arts, or athletics who can make a meaningful contribution to Canada’s cultural or sporting life.

This program is ideal for artists, musicians, filmmakers, athletes, writers, performers, and others with a strong track record of self-employment or participation at a high level in their field.

Who Is This Program For?

You may qualify if you:

  • Have at least 2 years of relevant experience in cultural or athletic activities (within the last 5 years)
  • Intend and are able to become self-employed in Canada
  • Can contribute significantly to Canada’s cultural or athletic landscape
  • Meet selection criteria including education, experience, age, language skills, and adaptability

     

Are medically and criminally admissible to Canada

Eligible Occupations

Examples of eligible cultural and athletic professions include:

  • Musicians, dancers, actors, filmmakers, photographers

  • Journalists, authors, designers, painters, sculptors

  • Coaches, athletes, referees, and program directors

Required Documents

  • Valid passport

  • Proof of self-employment or participation at a world-class level

  • Portfolio or evidence of work (press, awards, media, contracts)

  • Educational credentials

  • Language test results (optional but adds points)

  • Police certificates and medical exams
